Senior citizens: Level 1 and 2 driving ability tests

All drivers over the age of 75 with driving licence A, A1, B, B1, F, G, M are required by law to undergo a check-up every two years according to the Road Traffic Authorisation Ordinance (RTAO).

The examination should take place within the three months following the invitation. The Sevogel Practice will send the results of the examination directly to the Motor Vehicle Control Office.

The costs of the examination must be paid by the drivers themselves on the spot (CHF 125).

Bring the following to the examination:

  • Invitation to medical examination

  • Driving licence

  • Glasses, if you wear glasses

  • The results of the last visual acuity test by the optician or ophthalmologist, if available

The examination includes:

  • A detailed medical history and a physical examination

  • Eyesight check

  • Blood pressure measurement

  • Check of blood glucose levels for diabetics

Professional drivers: higher requirements apply (Level 2)

Holders of higher category driving licences, such as driving instructors, taxi drivers, bus drivers and lorry drivers must in principle have their driving ability examined regularly from the time they acquire their driving licence.

The examination takes place every five years until the age of 50 and every three years until the age of 70. The minimum requirements for this group are higher than for senior citizens over the age of 70 who do not fall into this type of higher driving licence category.
